Cristal clear brine for ZOUTMAN

ZOUTMAN is the worldwide reference for high quality sea salt. The company is one of the few producers offering high quality sea salt on an international scale. From the sites in Ghent and Roeselare in Belgium, they ship up to 450,000 tons of sea salt annually to more than 60 countries. At every step of production, the company pays attention to keeping its ecological footprint as small as possible. An example here is how the company handles water.

Optimal purification via ultrafiltration

ZOUTMAN uses about 35,000m³ of water per year in their production process. Raw sea salt carries residues such as sand, shells, etc. During the production process, the delivered raw sea salt is rinsed with water. To use the rinsing water as efficiently as possible, ZOUTMAN calls on the technical expertise of Ekopak.

The Ekopak unit, based on Ultrafiltration (UF), processes about 25m³ of water per hour. Through membrane technology, the pollution is filtered. ZOUTMAN has a zero discharge status for some time. In fact, part of the rinse water is recycled back into process water. The other part is purified into food-grade brine. This can be used for various purposes, such as cheese production, food preservation, etc. This sustainable brine can be used commercially by ZOUTMAN.

Ekopak ensures the optimal purification of the brine water. Thanks to the installation, ZOUTMAN is increasing its production capacity of food grade (food) brine. Ultrafiltration provides crystal clear brine that far exceeds the strictest food standards.

“Recovering process water is an important part of our production. We are glad we chose Ekopak, as they took care of the installation from A to Z.” – Louis Derycke – Project Manager at ZOUTMAN

As sustainability is an important aspect at ZOUTMAN, the company continues to work on minimizing their carbon and water footprint.
